Founded in 1938, the Brigantine Beach Patrol has grown both in numbers and the skills required of its members. Current manpower strength is __ working guards, both male and female, with eleven officers. Chief Joe Guenther is the highest-ranking member and supervisor of the patrol.
The American Red Cross has trained all of our members in first aid and CPR with __ of them certified as CPR instructors and __ EMTs. Additionally, __ members are water safety instructors.
In addition to keeping a watchful eye on swimmers, the beach patrol gives swimming lessons and water safety lectures at the Brigantine City Dock located on 26th Street South. The Beach Patrol also operates a two-week 'junior lifeguard" program wherein up to ___ candidates, both boys and girls, come out and learn basic lifeguarding techniques and water safety plus a "rookie camp" for first-year lifeguards. The Beach Patrol can also be seen overseeing such local aquatic events as the Jim King & Roger Lucy Mile Swim, the Elk's Club Bayfest and mile swim, the Brigantine Triathlon, and the Brigantine Waveriding Association's Surf Contests.
The beach patrol also competes in lifeguard races across the entire state of New Jersey from Island Beach down to Cape May, highlighted by the historic South Jersey Lifeguard Championships. The Brigantine City Beach patrol plays host to the Chief Kuhn Lifeguard Invitational which includes exciting rescue races and relays on the 16th Street South beach. The beach patrol also puts on an intersquad competition each summer called the Robert Oakenlander Rescue Races. This lifeguard race is for bragging rights among the beach patrol with the north zone, central zone, and south zone lifeguards competing against each other for the overall title.
The Brigantine City Beach Patrol's primary coverage area is approximately five miles of beach (with 20 stands), as well as the City Dock located along the bay on 26th Street South. The patrol also responds to calls on an additional six miles of unprotected beach.
